Zoot Suit is definitely part of Chicano theater. It was the first Chicano play to be performed on Broadway and the playwright, Luis Valdez is known as the Father of Chicano theater because of how important his plays were in unifying Chicano's and sharing their culture with the theatrical community. The play is spoken in both English and Spanish to show the real culture of Chicano's at the time. The play was written during the civil rights movement and displays the discrimination the Chicano community faced and the prejudice in which they were viewed upon. It also displays the harsh ways they were treated and stereotyped for crimes and how they were punished with little evidence. The success of Zoot Suit allowed Hispanic theater to rise, which also positively impacted Puerto Rico's theater by showing the Hispanic and Chicano culture and values through the plays. Ethnic pride was a major result of this play, further showcasing how important plays are in uniting and empowering cultures.
